Chapter 4

Name ____________________________                  Date _______________________

During the beginning of chapter four Fly is affording Babe his first opportunity to herd a group of ducks.  However, Fly’s thoughts as Babe was getting ready to try indicate what she anticipates happening.

Read the excerpt below and think about what Fly believes will happen when Babe attempts to herd the ducks.

Sheep-pig indeed, she thought, the idea of it!  The mere sight of him would probably send the flock into the next county.  Anyway, he’d never get near them on those short little legs.  Let him play with the ducks for a day or two and he’d forget all about it.

What does Fly mean when she thinks to herself, “Let him play with the ducks for a day or two and he’d forget all about it”?

He (Babe) snuffled under the bottom of the door, and from inside there came a cough and the sharp stamp of a foot, and then the sound of a hoarse complaining voice.
